Transforming Gallery Place-Chinatown

In a significant move to shape the future of the vibrant Gallery Place-Chinatown neighborhood, Mayor Muriel Bowser has officially launched the Gallery Place-Chinatown Task Force. The Task Force, chaired by Jodie McLean and Deborah Ratner Salzberg, is tasked with envisioning the potential future uses of the two-block District parcel that includes Capital One Arena and Gallery Place.

Mayor Bowser emphasizes the city’s success in repurposing old spaces in other neighborhoods and expresses eagerness to repeat this achievement, aligning with the city’s broader goal of adding 15,000 residents Downtown over five years. The Task Force will work on an immediate activation plan, a long-term vision, and an investment plan for the area.

The Task Force’s focus areas include:

  1. Developing a strategic vision
  2. Identifying activation programs
  3. Evaluating investment tools
  4. Promoting community engagement and marketing

The initiative aims to transform Gallery Place-Chinatown into a unique, world-class destination for residents, workers, and visitors, building on its existing fabric of community, cultural, and entertainment amenities. Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to contribute their ideas at BeDowntown.dc.gov.
