Saving Lives
Downtown has joined the push to combat malaria. The United Nations Foundation’s campaign, Nothing But Nets city tour, will kick off officially at the US Navy Memorial (701 Pennsylvania Avenue) on Tuesday, June 16, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm and will run through June 23.
Nothing But Nets began with Africa Malaria Day in 2007. What started as a multi-city tour to develop grassroots support to save lives by raising money to purchase insecticide-treated bed nets, evolved into World Malaria Day last year. To build momentum for this global campaign, new cities, including DC, have been added this year to help prevent malaria, the leading cause of death among African children.
Several Downtown organizations, including the Washington Kastles, Mystics and Wizards, have partnered with the UN Foundation to raise awareness about the cause. Participants at the US Navy Memorial gathering will include Mayor Fenty’s wife, Michelle Fenty and DC Councilmember Jack Evans (Ward 2), who will proclaim Nothing But Nets week in Washington.
The Washington Mystics will host a Nothing But Nets night during its home game against the Chicago Sky on Saturday, June 20, at 7:00 pm at the Verizon Center (601 F Street).
