Road and Tunnel Repairs
Give yourself more travel time. The K Street, H Street and Massachusetts Avenue bridges over I-395, as well as the 3rd Street Tunnel, will undergo repairs beginning Monday, October 17 through January 2013, weather permitting. Talk about patience …
Expect to see new sidewalks, curbs, gutters, street lights, traffic control devices, and resurfaced bridges once the construction project ends. Also, motorists using the 3rd Street Tunnel, officially called The Air Rights Tunnel, will benefit from better lighting and air exchange caused by electrical and mechanical upgrades. Don’t worry—all businesses and residences around the area will be accessible.
But before the gain, a little pain: All street closures will occur between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Tunnel lane closures: between 9:00 pm and 5:00 am.
- Work will start on H Street, between 2nd and 4th Streets NW, including the H Street Bridge, with a center lane work zone and two lanes of eastbound and westbound travel.
- Work will begin on Massachusetts Avenue, between 2nd and 4th Streets NW, including the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge, with a center lane work zone and two lanes of eastbound and westbound travel.
- Work will start in the Northbound Tunnel when traffic barriers are installed the night of October 18th; Southbound Tunnel traffic barriers will be installed following work on the Northbound side.
Good advice from the District Department of Transportation (DDOT): Stay alert when traveling through this corridor.
