DowntownDC BID is thrilled to announce that our beloved Director of Public Space and Operations, Lukas Umana, has been selected to join the competitive International Downtown Association‘s (IDA) Emerging Leader Fellowship (IDAELF25) program.
This prestigious, week-long experiential program selects only 30 professionals in the place management industry across the country each year. These fellows are recognized for their leadership potential and commitment to transforming urban centers through innovative public-private partnerships and sustainable economic development. The program offers the fellows opportunities to learn essential place management skills as leaders, gain practical tools to turn their area into a live-work-play experience.
Although Lukas has been with the BID for just over a year, he’s already marked significant transformations on Downtown D.C. Leading a dedicated team of more than 60 Safety/Hospitality and Maintenance Ambassadors (SAMs), Lukas ensures our streets are clean, welcoming, and safe every day. He’s also the driving force behind several standout public art installations, including the National Mistletoe on Anthem Row and the “We Demand Change” mural—made possible through strategic, values-driven partnerships.
“I’m honored and excited to join the IDAELF25 cohort,” Lukas shared. “This fellowship is an incredible opportunity to collaborate with other changemakers across the country, explore innovative solutions, and bring fresh ideas to support our Downtown D.C. community.”
Lukas follows in the footsteps of DowntownDC BID alumni Gerren Price, Rachel Hartman, and Ebony Walton, continuing to showcase the bold #BeDowntown impact on the IDAELF program. He’ll join this year’s cohort—alongside DMV-area fellows Robert Mandle, Maria Martins-Evora, Careyann Weinberg, Raeley Youngs, and Ema Zanello—in New York City from June 8 – 13, 2025.
We can’t wait to follow his journey and share the insights he brings home.
