Join the DC Public Library for a Banned Books Week conversation with renowned artist Xaviera Simmons, whose billboard artwork ‘FREEDOM IS NOT GUARANTEED’ is on view at the MLK Library this fall.

Dr. Rhea L. Combs, Director of Curatorial Affairs at the National Portrait Gallery, will discuss the evolution of Simmon’s image and text-based billboards in relationship to Simmons’ overall artistic practice. This conversation will include a sneak preview of Reading Work: Season One, a new multi-year online project that encourages a continuous political education, distributes books and monetary funds; and explores the nuances of creative labor.
