About The Event

Please join us for an opening reception of the 2nd annual “Everyday DC” exhibition at the Pepco Edison Place Gallery in Washington, D.C. on the evening of Wednesday, January 10, 2018.

“Everyday DC,” a photography exhibition on view at the Pepco Edison Place Gallery from January 9, 2018, through January 31, 2018, presents a visual narrative of everyday life in Washington, D.C. through the eyes of more than 100 DC public middle school students from all four quadrants of the city. The exhibition is the culmination of a unit designed by the Pulitzer Center in collaboration with DC Public Schools (DCPS) and facilitated by over a dozen DCPS visual arts teachers.

“Everyday DC” was inspired by the Everyday Africa project, founded by Pulitzer Center grantees Peter DiCampo and Austin Merrill to re-direct focus toward a more accurate understanding of what the majority of Africans experience on a day-to-day basis: normal life. Like Everyday Africa, Everyday DC challenges students to consider how Washington D.C. is portrayed in the media, and how their lived experiences relate to those portrayals.

The “Everyday DC” project is funded in part by the D.C. Commission on the Arts & Humanities, an agency supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. For more information about the unit plan and exhibition, contact education@pulitzercenter.org

The project is also supported by the Pepco Edison Gallery, which generously donated the space for the exhibition.

Gallery opens to the public every Tuesday to Friday, January 9 through January 31, from Noon to 4 p.m. Free admission.

The opening reception on Wednesday, January 10, is between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Remarks from Everyday Africa co-founders Peter DiCampo and Austin Merrill, student curators from Brookland Middle School and DCPS Director of Arts Nathan Diamond will begin at 5:30 p.m. Remarks will be followed by performances developed by theater students at Eastern Senior High School in response to the exhibition.
