About The Event

Diane Coburn Bruning, Artistic Director
Claudia Chudacoff, Principal Musician

Chamber Dance Project’s sixth Washington season brings together seven dancers from leading American companies, a resident string quartet, and guest musical artists in a program that reflects the company’s creative range, powerfully daring dancing, and signature approach to the collaboration of dancers and musicians together onstage.

Two world premieres highlight the program. International choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s Rondo Ma Non Troppo is a dynamic work for four dancers around a table that mirrors the dramatic intensity of Schubert’s String Quartet No 14 (“Death and the Maiden”).

Prufrock, co-conceived and directed by Diane Coburn Bruning and theatre director Matt Torney, navigates the emotional and psychological intricacies of T.S. Eliot’s masterwork, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.” The work for five dancers plays out against the poem’s text and an original sound score composed and performed by James Garver.

Washington premiere of Extremely Close, an evocative duet amidst a stage of white feathers by acclaimed Spanish choreographer, Alejandro Cerrudo (resident choreographer of Hubbard Street) with a lush piano score by Philip Glass.

Two works by Diane Coburn Bruning complete the program. The 2017 hit Songs by Cole returns, in which the wit and sophistication of Cole Porter’s music sparks a stylish collaboration between dancers and a jazz trio featuring vocalist Shacara Rogers. Journey, a pas de deux with Samuel Barber’s soaring adagio, explores the facets of a relationship with a moving emotional intimacy.

Pre-performance Artist Chats take place 45 minutes before the Friday and Saturday performances in the theater upper foyer, and are free for all ticket holders.

Chamber Dance Project’s Bring a Child for Free program offers a Saturday matinee ticket for young people up to age 18 accompanied by a paying adult; an all-ages onstage workshop with company dancers takes place after the matinee performance.
