WHO WE ARE
Founded in 1997 as a private, nonprofit place-management organization, the DowntownDC Business Improvement District (BID) is a catalyst, facilitator, and thought leader in diversifying the economy, promoting public-private partnerships, and enhancing the downtown experience for all. We oversee a 140-block area of approximately 530 properties and numerous parks and public spaces, from Massachusetts Avenue NW on the north, including the Walter E. Washington Convention Center at Mount Vernon Square, to Constitution Avenue NW on the south, and from Louisiana Avenue NW on the east to 16th Street on the west.

POSITION SUMMARY
The BID Safety & Maintenance Driver plays a key role in supporting DowntownDCâs day-to-day field operations. This position is responsible for operating BID vehicles safely and efficiently, performing routine vehicle and safety checks, and ensuring timely documentation and reporting of incidents, damages, and issues in the public space.
As both a Safety & Maintenance Ambassador and Driver, this role provides public safety observation, cleaning and maintenance support, and engagement with the unhoused community and the general public. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, dependable, and dedicated to maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment throughout the Downtown DC area.
This is an essential position that requires reporting to work during inclement weather and emergency situations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Event & Activation Logistics:
- Drive assigned BID vehicles safely and in accordance with all applicable traffic laws and internal policies.
- Complete daily vehicle safety inspection sheets, including documenting any pre-existing or new damages, fluid levels, tire conditions, lights, and cleanliness.
- Promptly report any vehicle-related issues, damages, accidents, or maintenance needs to Operations leadership.
- Ensure all BID vehicles are kept clean and fueled and stored securely when not in use.
- The driver will assist jumpers with loading trash when it is safe to do so and may be asked to perform other Operations department duties.
Public Safety & Incident Reporting:
- Act as a visible presence in Downtown DC, serving as a mobile extension for the BIDâs Safety & Maintenance team.
- Identify and report hazards in public space, including broken infrastructure, graffiti, sanitation issues, and other maintenance needs.
- Prepare and submit daily reports on observations made during shifts, including public space issues, security concerns, or any interactions with the public that warrant documentation.
- Engage respectfully with all members of the public and the unhoused community, prioritizing pedestrian safety and upholding a professional, courteous demeanor always.
Visual Assessments & Reporting:
- Proactively scan assigned routes for maintenance or safety concerns requiring BID attention utilizing the Operations mobile application.
- Submit detailed reports (with photos when applicable) through BID systems, ensuring timely follow-up and tracking.
- Identify and escalate issues that require immediate attention (e.g., biohazards, vandalism, obstructions, suspicious activity).
Support to Field Team:Â
- Provide support to other entities including transporting materials, supplies, or equipment as needed.
- Assist with event setup or breakdown by transporting items to/from BID storage or event locations.
- Fill in as needed for maintenance tasks or hospitality services while out in the field.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Valid driverâs license (DC, MD, or VA) with a clean driving record (required).
- Minimum of 1 year of professional driving experience is preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to complete logs/reports accurately.
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions and standing/walking for extended periods.
- Ability to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills; bilingual preferred but not required.
- Basic familiarity with Downtown DC geography, landmarks, and transportation systems.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Previous work in public space management, facilities/maintenance, transportation, or public safety.
- Experience in reporting or using digital tools to track field activity.
- Familiarity with working alongside homeless populations and handling sensitive interactions respectfully.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to sit and drive for extended periods.
- Occasionally required to lift and carry up to 50lbs.
- Manual dexterity to operate cleaning or maintenance tools if needed.
- Visual acuity for identifying issues in the field and safely navigating the vehicle.
COMPENSATION
This position is full-time with an hourly pay range between $19.50 to $22.00 depending on experience.
