Online Bike Registration

If you park your bicycle at Metro facilities, listen up. The Metro Transit Police Department (MTPD) today launched a free, online registration program to reduce bike theft and help police recover lost or stolen bicycles. Visit the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s (WMATA) website to sign up and submit a registration form. Have your bike’s make, model, serial number, color and frame size handy.

Other MTPD tips for keeping bikes secure:

  • Lock your bike to an authorized rack, not a fence, sign or other unauthorized fixture. (The Metro system has more than 1,700 bike racks positioned in well-lit, high traffic areas.)
  • Use U-Lock devices, which are sturdier than conventional wire or chain locks, to better protect their bike.
  • Use two locks, one for the front wheel and frame and the other for the rear wheel and frame.
  • Keep a copy of your bike’s serial number in your wallet. (The serial number will help police identify your bike if it is recovered or if the thief attempts to resell it.)
  • Hide a business card or index card with your name and phone number inside the bike frame.
  • Take your seat with you.
