Creating Jobs

To help create jobs in a tough economic environment the city is aggressively promoting One City One Hire, an employer-driven hiring initiative designed to put DC residents back to work. By all measures, it’s needed. Since the recession began in December 2007, the number of unemployed DC residents has more than doubled, to 37,000. They include residents with impressive work histories to those with limited skills. The District Department of Employment Services (DOES) has several programs and services—including tax incentives, wage subsidies, and pre-employment training—for employers and job seekers to help bridge the skills gap. DOES is also partnering with local companies to offer free job coaching and mentoring services to hiring employers.
