It’s time to bid farewell to a favored retailer. Filene’s Basement, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this month, will begin liquidating its remaining 21 stores, including the Downtown location at 529 14th Street, pending bankruptcy court approval. Best known for bargain shopping and special bridal events, the 102-year-old clothing chain filed for bankruptcy once before, in 2009, when it was sold to Syms Corp. in a resuscitation effort. Upon court approval, the stores will launch going-out-of-business sales running through the holiday season or the end of January. One message from Syms chief executive officer Marcy Syms that does bear repeating: “We hope you will take advantage of these sales.” Filene’s also has DC stores on Connecticut Avenue and in Mazza Gallerie on Wisconsin Avenue.
