MPD Stresses Small Vehicle Rules
Tourists seem to love Segways, those two-wheeled personal transporters which allow them to breeze through city streets. The operative word here is “street” because it’s illegal to ride the contraptions on sidewalks, placing them right up there with mopeds, both motorized and non-motorized bicycles and motorcycles as vehicles not to be operated on city pavements, according to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). One caveat: Non-motorized bicycles can be ridden on neighborhood sidewalks outside the central business district. And when it comes to all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), minibikes and dirt bikes, just know they’re illegal on DC streets and sidewalks. No exceptions.
