Nine months after the U.S. General Services Administration selected the Trump Organization to redevelop the Old Post Office Pavilion (1100 Pennsylvania Avenue), more details were revealed last week about the 250-room luxury hotel proposed for the site. Although tentative, current plans for the Downtown treasure and historic landmark include the following:

• Extending the original ground floor level in the open, internal courtyard and including public entrances on all sides.

• Creating retail and cafe space, with outdoor seating on C Street and on Pennsylvania Avenue.

• Having the glass annex house conference and banquet rooms as well as public event spaces.

• Expanding the existing mezzanine to include a restaurant or café with views of the ground floor and the grand clock tower.

• Preserving the building’s original room layout on the upper levels and adding guest rooms, including, perhaps, a suite.

• Adding windows on the ninth floor to showcase incredible views of D.C.

A representative from the Trump Organization and the design team presented the details at a DC Preservation League (401 F Street) annual membership meeting. The Trump hotel will join the Newseum (555 Pennsylvania Avenue), Central Michel Richard restaurant (1001 Pennsylvania Avenue), Café du Parc (1401 Pennsylvania Avenue) and Del Frisco’s Grille (1201 Pennsylvania Avenue), all vibrant additions to America’s Main Street, in 2016. But, first, a 60-year lease agreement must be signed with the GSA. After that happens, renovations could begin in 2014.
