The active areas of music-making — composing, improvising, and conducting— are traditionally male, while women are left to the more passive areas of accompanying and teaching. If one looks at the programming of various jazz concerts, one might notice that it seems 99% of jazz standards are written by men. Join SAAM for a celebration of women’s achievements in the traditionally male dominated fields of jazz. This performance focuses on music written by women within the jazz idiom from the 1920s to present day.
The first set will focus on women songwriters and lyricists of the 20th century presented in a modern fashion with fresh arrangements along with an informative background about each writer. The second set will focus on modern music to include pieces written by band members and women currently on the jazz scene. Multimedia will be presented, including video and a world premiere of a song inspired by the artwork of Kara Walker, whose artwork is currently on display at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
