He’s been a steadfast presence in Downtown since the DowntownDC BID’s inception in 1997. But Hiram K. Brewton retired recently as the BID’s director of environment services, a position in which he maintained close relations with federal and DC government agencies, particularly law enforcement entities, and worked with them and property managers on safety and crime prevention initiatives.

“He served the BID, the Downtown, and the city with dedication of service and a willingness to help out with many programs and projects which have contributed to making Downtown the vibrant and inviting place it is today,” said Richard H. Bradley, the BID’s executive director. “It has been a very long run, and we appreciate all that he has done.”

Hiram began as the director of field operations, hiring contractors to put the first Downtown Safety/Hospitality and Maintenance (SAMs) employees on the streets to serve as the ears, eyes, and caretakers of Downtown. Over time, he also oversaw the Safety Information Lobby Fairs in Downtown office buildings; partnered with the DC Superior Court’s Misdemeanor and Traffic Community Court; and hosted the BID’s Safety Alliance and Property Managers Council, public-private meetings which focus on enhancing safety efforts and sharing timely information on issues concerning Downtown tenants and patrons.
