The federal government, D.C. government, and area schools announced their closures Tuesday, Jan. 21 following the National Weather Service’s decision on Monday to issue a Winter Storm Warning for the Washington, D.C. area.

D.C. public schools are among the many local schools that have closed in advance of expected snowfall.

Forecasts predict 3-6 inches of snow in the District of Columbia on Tuesday. The storm was anticipated to arrive in downtown around 7 a.m. and the storm warning duration extends until 11 p.m.

Due to the timing and snow accumulation, both morning and afternoon rush hours may be affected. Workers, residents and commuters should monitor media and weather reports and plan accordingly.  On Tuesday morning, Metro announced that it would begin the day with a regular weekday schedule, but said service levels may be reduced later in the day due to “expected low ridership and deteriorating weather conditions.”

“For your safety, travel only if necessary,” Metro advised in its winter weather advisory.

Metro also warned that Metrobus service may be canceled later in the day, but will make “every effort” to provide 3 hours notice of service cancellations. Additionally, MetroAccess has been suspended.

The DowntownDC BID will continue to work with its partner, Pathways to Housing to assist homeless individuals in anticipation of the snow and decreasing temperatures.

D.C. law requires property owners to clear snow and ice from sidewalks, handicap ramps and steps on their property within the first eight daylight hours after the snow, sleet or ice ceases.
