St. John's Episcopal Church

St. Johns Church Worship

Washington, DC 20005

Since 1816, every president since James Madison has worshipped in this sacred space situated just off Lafayette Square. Madison selected Pew 54 and, ever since, this spot has been set aside for the United States president.

The original design of architect Benjamin Latrobe, second architect of the Capitol Building, was a simple classical style in the form of a Greek cross. In 1820, the little church was enlarged with the extension of the west transept arm and the addition of a Roman Doric Portico. Later, the addition of a triple-tiered steeple significantly altered the original plan.

Within its yellow, stuccoed façade, St. John's Church boasts 27 stunning memorial windows, a silver chalice, and a jeweled, solid gold communion chalice. This sacred space, with its original design still recognizable, remains a living parish in the heart of the city.
