Dear DowntownDC Stakeholder,

DowntownDC is full of events, and right now there are plenty of new exhibits to explore, whether it’s at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, the National Children’s Museum, or the Zenith Gallery.

Taking in all that arts and culture can leave you a little depleted. Luckily, there’s a new spot in Penn Quarter that offers sweet and delicious ways to re-energize.

Do you have thoughts about the District’s economic development strategy over the next five years? Now’s your chance to share them.

The BID has launched a new regular website feature, Spotlight, which will provide up-close looks at the many great things to be found downtown. Be forewarned: Our first story might make you crave vegetables (even you, meat lovers).

Also, find out who’s embracing solar energy, see what law firm just moved downtown, and learn what “bleisure” is by catching up on the news.

There’s all this and more in today’s Digest below.

The touring exhibition “Emmett Till & Mamie Till-Mobley: Let the World See” will share the story of how a mother’s bravery and fight for justice more than six decades ago fueled the civil rights movement in America and provides a framework for people and communities committed to racial healing. The show, running Thursday, January 26, to Sunday, March 12, at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, aims to dive into this incredible history and challenge visitors to make a ripple of justice in their own communities.

Those indulgent treats that can be picked up or delivered “crazy late” are now in DowntownDC. Whether you want cookies, brownies, ice cream, or some combination of it all, Insomnia Cookies provides the sweet goods to brighten your day — or your late night. Plus, we hear they’re planning some extra-festive things for Valentine’s Day.

I'd give you a cookie, but I ate it.

The National Endowment for the Arts is awarding a $25,000 grant to the National Children’s Museum to expand its Artist-In-Residence Program, which will enable the museum to partner with a local artist to create new artistic programs and a collaborative art installation to inspire equity, sustainability, and artists of all ages. Stay tuned for more news about the program this spring.

And now there’s another reason to visit the museum, especially if you have (or know) kiddos ages 2 to 12. “XOXO: An Exhibit About Love & Forgiveness” just opened with the aim of providing children and caregivers the opportunity to think about and explore feelings to help little ones understand, appreciate, and express their emotions.

Every five years, the District of Columbia updates its economic development strategy, a tool for identifying challenges and opportunities, setting goals and priorities, guiding action and investments, and aligning stakeholders to achieve a shared vision.

D.C.’s Comeback Plan presents goals the District government will strive to achieve over the next five years, and it requires cross-sector collaboration: You’re invited to share your input by Wednesday, February 1, to help be part of the comeback.

Zenith Gallery’s “Black Like Me” exhibition brings together a dozen artists who offer a variety of media sharing rich stories. As participating artist Julee Dickerson-Thompson says, her goal is to “to nourish and delight … the eye … the soul … the spirit!”

The opening reception will offer a chance to meet the artists from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 15.

This Chinatown eatery has been providing downtown workers, residents, and visitors with flavorful tacos, enchiladas, and more since 2019. And there’s not an ounce of meat in them. Chaia’s 100% vegetarian menu offers selections that will make you rethink how easy it is to get vital nutrients — and you probably won’t even miss the meat. “I like to say that I’m on a mission to get people to eat delicious vegetables,” co-founder Bettina Stern says.
