DC’s LGBTQ history didn’t start at Stonewall. Discover untold stories of protest and pride dating back to 1965 at this bold new exhibit.

Pickets, Protests, and Parades: The History of Gay Pride in Washington honors the courage, resistance, and resilience of DC’s LGBTQ+ community. In 1965, four years before the Stonewall Riots, ten brave individuals marched for their rights in front of the White House. Spanning ten powerful eras, this inspiring outdoor exhibition showcases 60 years of activism through a visual Quote Wall and striking Hero Cubes, celebrating the pioneers who paved the way for progress. As WorldPride arrives in DC, this exhibit stands as a tribute to those who fought, and continue to fight, for justice, dignity, and Pride.

The exhibition will open daily to the public from May 18 through July 6, 2025, on Freedom Plaza.
