The FBI is a division of the Department of Justice. The first director, J. Edgar Hoover was born in Washington. He wanted attention brought to the good work of the Bureau, so he decided to introduce the public to the Bureau's work through tours. When the new FBI building was designed in the late 1960's, the architect, Stanley Gladych, set aside a large part of one floor in the building to be used specifically for tours. The exhibit halls give an idea of the history and different areas of federal crime the FBI Special Agents investigate, such as foreign counter-intelligence, terrorism, white-collar crime, organized crime, and narcotics violations. Viewing the serology lab, the fiber analysis lab, and the firearms demonstrations are part of the tour.Facts From Steven Hoglund - Historian:ITEM: Residents of the National Capital area are in general agreement that this is the ugliest building ever built in downtown Washington.ITEM: The holes in the sides of the building are NOT a symbol of the Bureau's prowess in marksmanship. Instead, they were designed to accommodate marble facing, which would have made the building less formidable. Ironically, Director Hoover died before the building was completed and in a direct slap at him, funds for finishing the building were rescinded.
