Bicycle Parking

The Downtown BID and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) recently installed 50 bike racks to provide cyclists with an attractive alternative to locking bikes to parking meters, street furniture, trees and street signs. Sidewalk bicycle racks encourage short-term bicycle trips such as shopping, business meetings, deliveries, dining and patronizing the growing number of attractions Downtown.

Longer-term parking for Downtown bicycle commuters is best provided in a building's parking garage or interior storage areas. At the request of a property manager, the DDOT Bicycle Program will help select, locate and install racks in a Downtown building. The property management need only pay for the installer's fees. The city will pay up to 50% of a property owner's costs to retrofit a building with bicycle parking facilities. For more information on this new program, contact the DDOT Bicycle Program Manager, Jim Sebastian, by e-mail at jim.sebastian@dc.gov or by telephone 202-671-2331.

In addition, the Downtown BID has a bicycle parking brochure available, describing the legal requirements for property owners to provide bicycle parking in their buildings. The brochure offers examples of the most effective types of bicycle parking for cyclists and property managers. Download the brochure (PDF, 1.7 MB) or contact Naa Koshie Mills at koshie@downtowndc.org.

We'd like to express thanks to Akridge, Boston Properties, CB Richard Ellis, Equity Office, Gaedeke, Hines and the Lansburgh for participating in the Downtown Bicycle Parking Program this year. If you are interested in having a bike rack installed free of charge in the public space adjacent to your building or in pursuing bicycle commuter parking for your building, please contact Naa Koshie Mills at 202.661.7570 or at koshie@downtowndc.org.
