Finding your way around DC should be as easy as possible. That's why we spearheaded the effort to develop a citywide sign system to help you find your way to popular destinations like the White House, Ford's Theatre, Chinatown and the Smithsonian Museums. Look for blue informational signs at street corners and neighborhood maps near every Metro entrance. These easy to use maps have been design to orient you to the direction you are facing while reading them, so you don't have to turn them around in your head to figure out where to walk. We also have created a handy orientation device for people using a map to get around. We've placed a star at the base of every blue sign and neighborhood map. One point of the star has an "N" for north. If you get turned around, just look for the "N" and it will help you figure out the direction you are headed. Once you are here, we want you to know all about the amazing history of Downtown DC. In 2001, we unveiled the Civil War to Civil Rights Downtown Heritage Trail in collaboration with our partners, Cultural Tourism DC and the District Department of Transportation. Three walking loops with 22 signs describe Downtown DC's development from a sleepy back water town into a world capital through the stories of people such as Abraham Lincoln, Clara Barton, Martin Luther King Jr., Walt Whitman and many other great Americans who made history here. Our self-guided walking tour book is available at local bookstores and at the Cultural Tourism DC website. The Downtown BID developed the wayfinding signs with assistance from more than 30 stakeholder groups. Calori and Vanden-Eynden from New York designed them. Hanna Smotrich at Sideview Graphics designed The Heritage Trail signs. DDOT and the FHA provided funding for both these projects.
