Sustainable You, Online

Check out two, new interactive online tools—GreenUp DC and Green Dashboard—introduced by the District Department of the Environment (DDOE). The tools help homeowners reduce their environmental footprint and all DC residents better understand the city’s efforts to become more environmentally sustainable, and the progress made thus far. GreenUp DC offers plenty, including interactive mapping features that allow you to see existing green energy, storm water reduction and energy conservation projects. It even calculates potential benefits of those projects for property owners and provides a list of qualified professionals who can do the conservation work. GreenUp DC also can be used to plan a project for the new RiverSmart Rain Garden and Pervious Paver Rebate program, which reimburses homeowners $1.25 for each square foot of impervious surface treated, up to $1,000. Cool? Well, Green Dashboard provides access to about 60 indicators in six categories—air quality and climate, energy and building, nature, transportation, waste and recycling, and water—and shows how DC compares with other jurisdictions. Both GreenUp DC and Green Dashboard are part of Mayor Gray’s Sustainable DC initiative.
