Shopper’s Delight: Sales Tax Holiday

Tax-free shopping is just around the corner. DC offers its second Sales Tax Holiday this year beginning at 12:01 am Saturday, August 2 through midnight Sunday, August 10. Tax relief comes in the way of an exemption from the 5.75% sales tax for school supplies, clothes, shoes and accessories such as jewelry, handbags and non-prescription glasses. To qualify, each item must cost $100 or less—and the tax exemption applies to each eligible item, despite the number of items on the bill.

Strapped for cash? Not to worry. The exemption covers layaway sales. So if the retailer and customer enter an agreement during the exemption period or the customer makes a final payment on the layaway order during the exemption period, all is well. Should you miss this nine-day tax holiday, the next one arrives in late November and runs 17 days.
