The area surrounding D.C. Fire Department station Engine 2/Rescue 1 at 500 F Street NW received a facelift this week thanks to the DowntownDC BID’s Maintenance SAMs (Safety/Hospitality and Maintenance employees) and First Trinity Lutheran Church (309 E Street NW).

BID Maintenance Services Manager Ronald Jones and SAMs Maurice Yancey and Wayne Cain on Sunday, Sept. 7 partnered with scores of church volunteers under the leadership of Rev. Thomas J. Knoll to clean the area surrounding the Chinatown fire station. The team pulled weeds from tree boxes and sidewalks, cleaned the sidewalk and curb lines, mulched tree boxes on the perimeter, removed leaves, trash and cigarette butts and power washed the entire area.

The effort took several hours and the visual impact was substantial.

Captain Alan Noznesky expressed gratitude for the cleanup effort and along with the squad of Engine 2/Rescue 1 the fire station offered coffee, water and the station facilities to the cleanup group.

Maintenance SAMs work 362 days a year to clean DowntownDC through trash removal, recycling, power washing, graffiti, sticker and gum removal, and beautification efforts including painting, hanging flower boxes and maintaining select plantings.

The BID also works with partners and stakeholders to augment Downtown. Each fall, the BID and First Trinity Lutheran Church partner to clean a designated section of the Downtown community.
