Finally, a major supermarket has come to Downtown! On Friday, September 12, Safeway opened the first-ever full-service grocery store when it debuted a 57,607 square-foot facility in CityVista, in the Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District (CID). The store is the first Safeway within DC in 11 years, certainly a boon to the residents occupying the nearly 500 condominium and apartment units above the store, as well as nearby neighborhoods. What a feat. Safeway hosted a preview party at CityVista, the new residential and retail community at the corner of 5th and K Streets.

The new Safeway incorporates the company’s lifestyle format and is the first in DC to feature a nut bar, wine cellar and an open-flame hearth oven within the bakery. Other store features: a Starbucks Coffee bar, Bergmann’s Dry Cleaners, pharmacy, in-store scratch bakery, full-service deli, service meat counter, floral shop and fresh seafood department. The deli includes Safeway’s line of fresh Signature Stock Pot soups, a separate self-serve olive bar, salad bar and home meal replacement bar, where shoppers can select from a variety of hot entrees and side dishes to create ready-to-serve meals.
