Been to the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery (8th and F streets) lately? The Courtyard Café has a new menu, including a quiche of the week, illy Italian gourmet espresso as well as a variety of desserts, charcuterie and cheese platters for late afternoon. This fare and more can be consumed in the lovely Kogod Courtyard, surrounded by live orchids and lush foliage. In addition, the Museum Stores have a new look and new products. Expect to see a variety of contemporary and artist-made gifts, including lampwork glass jewelry, distinctive sterling silver jewelry, Pantone-color-inspired products such as folding chairs and espresso sets, and merchandise—mugs, magnets and journals—inspired by items in the permanent collection, such as William H. Johnson’s “Flowers” and the popular Mike Wilkins’ “Preamble” collection. The biggest change, however, is coming in April. That’s when Kim Sajet will become the new director of the National Portrait Gallery. She is currently the president and chief executive officer of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.
