Big-City Forum Thirteen leaders of America’s top Downtown organizations met in Tampa, Florida in January 2009 for the first of several planned roundtables. They assembled at the winter gathering to discuss the effects of the global financial crisis. A top real estate economist and the chairman of the International Downtown Association joined the participants, who represented such diverse cities as New York, Philadelphia, Denver and Seattle. . Forum 1 Four major findings emerged out of a two-day forum highlighting many initiatives that Downtown executives from around the country are pursing in light of the global financial and economic crisis. This report, Downtowns and the Global Economic Crisis, shows the many strategies being used by Downtowns to minimize adverse effects, including reaffirming basis services, refocusing marketing campaigns and reframing their economic base. Many tenets covered by the group also could apply to other “urban walkable” areas, including midtowns, former suburban town centers, reconfigured suburban commercial centers, lifestyle centers and areas around universities and hospitals.
