Recycling Blitz

The DowntownDC BID area public recycling program is now fully in place. Since the DowntownDC BID, Pepsico, and the Department of Public Works (DPW) partnered in March to create a comprehensive recycling program, all 364 Pepsico Dream Machine recycling bins have been installed throughout the BID. So far, the recycling bins have diverted 12.82 tons of material from the waste stream—5.56 tons of which were diverted between June 2 and June 28.

Now, the BID is entering the next phase of the program, focused on education. We are informing the public about what can and cannot be recycled in order to reduce contamination and further increase diverting recyclable material from landfills and incineration. Our Safety/Hospitality and Maintenance workers (SAMs) are responsible for maintaining the bins and serve as on-the-street liaisons who educate people about public recycling and the Dream Machine program.
