The L Street bike lane is now officially open, expanding D.C.’s protected bike lanes by nearly four miles. Several local bicyclists, including our very own Ellen Jones, director of Infrastructure and Sustainability, and Megan Kanagy, manager of capital projects, joined the ribbon cutting ceremony with Mayor Vincent Gray at the intersection of L and 15th streets. The District Department of Transportation installed a green lane for eastbound bicycle traffic moving from New Hampshire Avenue to 12th Street. A painted buffer and short vertical posts, called plastic bollards, now separate the bike lane from vehicular traffic. With the addition of the L Street lane, Downtown now has protected bike lanes on 15th Street as well as Pennsylvania Avenue.
