National Mall Makeover

The National Park Service wants to hear your views on how to improve America’s backyard, the National Mall. Provide your input on land use measures, restrooms, vendors, wayfinding signs and much more.

The comment period for the Draft National Mall Plan and Environmental Impact Statement ends on Thursday, March 18—so hurry. The Downtown BID, a consulting party to this initiative, encourages stakeholders to review the draft at www.nps.gov/nationalmallplan and submit comments.

The plan will guide rehabilitating the National Mall’s historic landscape; identify measures to help it function better as the nation’s primary civic space; address visitors’ need for access and other concerns; and improve park operations and sustainability. The National Park Service (NPS) released the draft plan in December to provide an overall vision and guidelines for the Mall’s long-term management, which the Downtown BID supports.

“Although the details of a number of National Mall Plan recommendations undoubtedly can be debated, the many proposed major projects and programs are solid,” Richard H. Bradley, the BID’s executive director testified at a National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) hearing on March 4. “There is no doubt they will result in a much-improved National Mall. Now is the time to finalize this draft National Mall Plan and move ahead on the long road of implementing the plan.”
