Looking Back and Gearing Up |

Dear Friends of Downtown,
The DowntownDC BID was pleased to end April on a high note with our successful State of Downtown Forum. Held on April 24 at the Newseum, the Forum allowed us to present key findings about the Downtown economy and show how they compare with regional and national trends to keep Downtown and DC competitive. As usual, our State of Downtown publication was on point and our panelists from the public and private sectors, superb.
As we round out our spring activities, we will focus our efforts on parks. Construction to revitalize U.S. Reservation 72, better known as Chinatown Park, is already underway and is expected to end by early June, in time for warmer weather. This project, in conjunction with the National Park Service (NPS), includes replacing the interior sidewalk, improving the migration system and installing new sod, trash bins, and benches.
We kept the pace up on April 24. That’s when our Downtown Safety/Hospitality and Maintenance (SAM) employees partnered with Casey Trees, NPS, the DC Office of Planning, and dozens of volunteers to plant 10 trees in another park—U.S. Reservation 68, also known as Burke Park. The SAMs will water the new trees weekly through the fall.
During this time of year, the BID springs into seasonal cleanup mode. Freshly painted street poles, new hanging flower baskets and new tree boxes all pop into view as we begin our Spring Beautification Initiative. The SAMs power wash sidewalks, plant flowers, remove gum from sidewalks and remove dead and dying trees from tree grates.
It’s all about creating a remarkable urban experience in Downtown.
As always, we ask you to please share your thoughts with us at update@downtowndc.org.
See You Downtown,

Richard H. Bradley
