Hurricane Watch

In August, with Hurricane Irene looming on the horizon, the DowntownDC BID jumped into high alert mode, advising all Downtown property owners, property managers, businesses, and retailers to take advantage of the advance warning issued by the National Weather Service to prepare for horrific weather conditions. With safety top of mind, the BID urged them to help clear public space of loose objects and any debris that could become dangerous projectiles during the storm and provided helpful information about emergency agencies, shelters and other relevant resources.

The BID’s Safety/Hospitality and Maintenance (SAM) team played an important role. They alerted property managers about potential hazards such as chairs, tables, and umbrellas at sidewalk cafés; empty newspaper boxes; and trash.  Building owners and tenants also were advised and reminded to remove small planters, chairs, tables and other loose objects from building balconies. In addition, several property managers and building engineers allowed the BID to use their storage facilities to stow 175 flower baskets that Maintenance SAMs had placed throughout the DowntownDC BID area during this year’s annual Beautification Initiative.

Even Carmine’s (425 7th Street), one of Downtown’s newest and largest restaurants, contributed to the emergency efforts by donating enough food to DC’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management Team (which consisted of representatives from several DC government agencies, utilities and emergency response teams) to feed 60 people.

Kudos to all for a job well done!
