It’s no secret that city officials believe streetcars will spur economic development and make it easier for DC residents to move between neighborhoods to access jobs, shopping, and other destinations. Now, you can read all about these benefits and more in the “Streetcar Land Use Study” released recently by the DC Office of Planning (OP). The study provides an assessment of the system’s citywide benefits, including access to jobs and schools, quality of life, transportation costs for households, job growth, and the real estate market. The study also reviews the challenges: streetcars’ impact on historic and cultural resources, housing costs and small business retention. Both benefits and challenges are examined along each of nine proposed corridors of the 37-mile system, which, according to the study, could add $5 billion to $7 billion in value to existing property and attract $5 billion to $8 billion in new investment. Talk about incentive! Review a copy of the report.
