Shoppers who favor seasonal and local products from small family farms in the Chesapeake Bay area now have more time to peruse wares at the Penn Quarter FRESHFARM Farmers’ Market on 8th Street, between D and E Streets, this year. The market season runs through December 23, nearly a week longer than last year, when it was extended beyond the week before Thanksgiving until December 17 for the first time. It’s all about supply and demand.

The market’s fresh and popular fruits, vegetables, flowers, soups, pastries and other fare have won over hundreds of Downtown workers and residents. The new FRESHFARM Market, By the White House on Vermont Avenue between H and I Streets, will return on May 6 and continue until November 18. President and Mrs. Obama, who support nutrition and good food, were instrumental in getting the market get off the ground last September. Food stamps, senior coupons and Women, Infants and Children (WIC) vouchers will be accepted at this location, and the value doubled under the market’s double dollars program.

In 2010, FRESHFARM Markets will operate 11 producer-only farmers’ markets in DC and Maryland, including three new locations in Crystal City, Virginia; Bethesda, Maryland; and in southwest DC at the US Department of Health and Human Services. The Penn Quarter and White House markets will open every Thursday from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. For more information, visit www.freshfarmmarket.org.
