To get the skinny on innovative new bike lanes in Downtown DC, bicycle lovers and other interested parties are invited to a public meeting on Thursday, March 18, at the US Navy Memorial (701 Pennsylvania Avenue) from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.…

Find out about creative proposals for new bike lanes on Pennsylvania Avenue as well as Eye, L, 15th and 9th Streets. With the steady increase in the number of cyclists and plans to expand the SmartBike DC bike-sharing program, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is developing unique, new bike infrastructure in the greater downtown area. Specific details for each street will be discussed at the meeting.

Bicyclists, buses, delivery trucks and pedestrians all compete for DC curb space. To “spread the wealth” and protect cyclists as well as accommodate other Downtown activity, DDOT studied New York and Montreal designs for answers. Expect to see some of those designs unveiled at this DDOT and this Downtown and Golden Triangle BID-sponsored event.

The city is gearing up to expand SmartBike DC tenfold this fiscal year—from 10 to 100 kiosks, extending out from the Center City. SmartBike DC, the nation’s first self-service public bike rental program, provides an alternative transportation network for the city’s workers, residents and visitors. DDOT, in partnership with Clear Channel Outdoor, has four of the existing 10 kiosks in Downtown near the Gallery Place, Judiciary Square, Metro Center and McPherson Square Metrorail stations.

In addition, the Downtown BID has pledged to match the DDOT ‘s bike rack installations to reach the goal of 200 new racks in the Downtown BID area this year. A new bicycle-assistance training component for Downtown SAMs, also will boost Downtown DC’s bicycle friendliness.

Bike parking will be provided at this Innovative Bike Lanes meeting.
