Did you “Kick It?” this summer with the DowntownDC Business Improvement District (BID) and attend the BID’s first-ever summer movie series?

“DowntownDC Presents: Can I Kick It? With Shaolin Jazz,” was an outdoor martial arts film series on Freedom Plaza where the movies were scored with a live hip-hop soundtrack by DJ 2-Tone Jones.

Moviegoers snacked on free popcorn courtesy of Pret A Manger while they watched the movies in comfort with stadium cushions provided by Zipcar. Guests were always in a great mood by the time the movies started thanks to pre-event activities including a special happy hour from Boss Shepherd’s, and plaza ping pong and fun giveaways from the BID and Shaolin Jazz.

The Tuesday night series (June 6-27) included a special movie night on June 20 for cult classic “The Last Dragon,” where over 500 attendees of all ages showed up for the fun. Moviegoers received an extra surprise from pre-event guest DJ Stylus from Axel F DJ collective, who played 80s music to pump up the crowd, a special guest appearance by Sho’nuff himself played by David THE OH! Oliver, who made himself available for on-site photos with guests, and the unveiling of BID glow-in-the-dark tattoos for all!

The final movie screening, “Big Trouble in Little China,” drew more than 400 guests. After the movie, everyone was invited to stay for movie trivia and prizes from Shaolin Jazz.

Next year, the DowntownDC BID hopes to continue summer movie nights, with a new twist of course!

A special thanks to everyone who contributed to making this year’s Can I Kick It? a success. See you next summer!
