The DowntownDC Business Improvement District (BID) on April 13 held an annual employee appreciation celebration at the Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church where the organization honored many of its more than 100 employees, including several who have worked at the BID since its inception in 1997.

Kristi Whitfield, the BID’s director of public space operations spoke directly about the importance of the Safety/Hospitality and Maintenance (SAM) ambassador program, which provides over 90 stable, low-entry living-wage jobs that offer training opportunities and excellent benefits.

Attendees were treated to a performance by Roquois, the BID’s digital media and design assistant and a showing of the BID’s latest television commercial, featuring the SAMs.

One Safety/Hospitality Ambassador and one Maintenance Ambassador were chosen as SAMs of the Year due to their performance over the past year. The winners announced were: Safety/Hospitality Ambassador Jahmil Thompson and Maintenance SAM Charles Stroud Jr.

Jahmil Thompson has been repeatedly honored as SAM of the Month since beginning his employment at the BID in 2009. “Jahmil is known for his outgoing and friendly demeanor,  and his willingness to go the extra mile for tourists and other visitors to the downtown area.   He and his teammates have been essential in helping to guide young people the drop in center on Monday nights.” – Kristi Whitfield

Charles Stroud Jr. joined the BID in 2011. Stroud is from Suitland, MD. In his free time, he enjoys playing the bass. “Chuckie has great energy and is a wonderful representative of the SAM program.  Chuckie shows up wherever you need him ready to help and keep the BID an attractive clean place.” – Kristi Whitfield
