Who knew the Washington metropolitan area was such a happening place for technology? So much so, in fact, that Forbes, a leading source of business news and financial information, says the region now ranks No. 1 as a tech hot spot in the U.S. This is because science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) jobs grew by 21 percent in the region from 2001 to 2012—better than any other of the 51 largest U.S. metropolitan statistical areas over that period. Put another way, STEM employment was basically flat in the San Francisco and Boston regions and declined 12.6 percent in San Jose—the heart of Silicon Valley! Even Chicago, New York and Los Angeles—the country’s three largest mega regions—all lost tech jobs over the past decade. Check out the rankings here.
