If you recently arrived to DC, you aren’t alone. According to American Moving and Storage Association data, the city was America’s most popular moving destination from January to March of 2012 despite high rents and home prices that haven’t adjusted much over the course of the Great Recession. What keeps people coming? Favorable employment prospects—after all the federal government is the city’s biggest employer—and salaries that keep pace with costs. Further down the list, the Sun Belt made a strong showing: Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Houston were all in the top ten; along with Chicago, Denver, and Atlanta. According to Yahoo!, a common factor among all these cities is a healthy job market. New York City was conspicuously absent from the list.
