Honoring Those Who Served

Release Date: Friday, May 2nd 2008

National Police Week, from May 11-17, is an excellent time to pay tribute to heroes of American law enforcement.  All activities for the week, organized by several groups dedicated to honoring the service and sacrifice of the law enforcement community, are open to the public.

The annual Candlelight Vigil, sponsored by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF), takes place May 13 at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in the 400 block of E at Judiciary Square.  The event begins at 8 pm.  The march of bagpipers, organized by the National Conference of Law Enforcement Emerald Societies, follows on May 14. The procession travels from New Jersey Avenue & F Street en route to the Officers Memorial at 6 pm.

Not to be missed is the National Peace Officers Memorial Day Service at the U.S. Capitol on May 15 at noon, organized by the Fraternal Order of Police/Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary (FOP/FOPA).  Also, the National Police Survivors' Conference convenes on May 16 from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center. Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS) will hold the conference.
