In this Year of the Snake, slither on over to the Chinese New Year Parade, taking place on Sunday, February 10, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The celebration begins at 6th and I streets before culminating at 6th and H streets in Chinatown.

Downtown will celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year with a parade featuring the traditional Chinese dragon and lion dances, Kung Fu demonstrations, live musical entertainment and the giant firecracker—an all-time favorite that ignites at 4 p.m. on H Street, between 6th and 7th streets.

Once again, the festivities will include programs and activities at the Chinatown Community Cultural Center (616 H Street). Revelers can participate in traditional Chinese calligraphy, children’s crafts, face painting, live music and dance performances, poetry readings, film screenings, raffles, free giveaways, and much more.

Who and what you can expect to see at this year’s parade: Mayor Vincent Gray, Miss Chinatown, performances by the Shaolin Monks, the Wong People Chinese Lion Dancers—a D.C.-based organization that promotes Chinese culture and martial arts—five local Chinese Schools, the Anacostia High School Band, the Asian Pacific American Bar Association—the list goes on.

The parade is hosted by the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association (510 I Street), an umbrella organization representing 30 Chinese-American organizations throughout the Greater Washington Metropolitan area.
