Get ready for Car Free Days—notice that “s” at the end of the word “day.” That’s because the worldwide movement to celebrate more sustainable forms of transportation will take place over three full days in the D.C. area this year, Friday, Sept. 20 – Sunday, Sept. 22.

The goal is to reduce harmful environmental impacts by getting people to:

  • Walk
  • Bike
  • Ride public transportation
  • Telework
  • Carpool
  • Vanpool

Reducing car use also helps lessen traffic congestion and improves air quality. Everyone—from commuters, families, and individuals—can pledge to go car free or share a ride and go car-lite for one, two, or all three days.

Take the car free pledge and be eligible to win prizes such as:

  • An iPad
  • Annual Capital Bikeshare      memberships
  • SmarTrip Cards loaded with fare
  • A $250 gift card to BicycleSPACE
  • Two slices of pizza and a beverage from Flippin” Pizza
  • MARC Train commuter rail passes
  • Carsharing freebies from car2go and ZipCar (403 8th Street)

Even if you already use transit or don’t own a car, you can take the free pledge to go car free or car lite.

Commuter Connections, a regional transportation network coordinated by the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, organizes this annual event.
