Happy birthday to Capital Bikeshare! DC and Arlington County’s regional bikesharing program turns one year old this month. My, how time flies! It seems like only yesterday that the ubiquitous red bikes began appearing on our Downtown streets. Capital Bikeshare built on the success of the District Department of Transportation’s (DDOT) former SmartBikeDC program, launched in August 2008 and ended officially in February 2011. Today, Capital Bikeshare offers 24-hour access to more than 1,100 bikes at 114 stations, making it the nation’s largest bikesharing network. Its ridership now exceeds 140,000 trips per month. To celebrate this success, all are invited to a fun-filled birthday bash on Thursday, September 22 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at Yards Park.
