DowntownDC BID employees attended the annual Esri International User Conference in San Diego, California, where the BID received a Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award last week. The world’s largest geographic information system (GIS) conference drew more than 13,000 attendees from more than 150 countries.

Blake Holub, the BID’s quality assurance manager, and Brian Gober, the GIS program specialist, gave a presentation about the organization’s new Field Asset Management Mobile Solution, implemented more than a year ago.  The BID worked with JMT Technology Group to develop a solution to properly address its customized needs and overhaul a previously manual-based system for public space condition reporting. The solution includes using a mobile application based on Esri ArcGIS software to better identify, report and track elements in public space to enhance Downtown’s overall physical environment and the pedestrian experience.

The BID received a SAG Award for its work on this project. The award acknowledges vision, leadership, hard work, and the innovative use of Esri’s GIS technology. The BID joins a list of more than 50 award recipients worldwide making up Esri’s extensive network of account users. During the opening, keynote speech, one of the BID’s maps about Downtown’s homelessness population was used to exemplify quality visualization and information sharing.

Said Esri president Jack Dangermond: “They deserve recognition for both solving their communities’ greatest challenges and their invaluable contributions to the continued evolution of geographic science.”

The annual conference is the third user conference that BID staff has presented at in the past year.
