DowntownDC is the place where we all love to eat, shop, exercise, attend concerts, sporting events and more and today, the multitude of activities you enjoy in Downtown are now reflected in colorful, new street banners.

Take a slight look up today and you’ll likely find one of the 384 new street pole banners created by the DowntownDC Business Improvement District (BID). Bikers cycling, athletes entertaining crowds, a woman standing in tree pose; these and other activities now adorn the streets of Downtown.

Each banner features a figure’s contours but if you take a closer look, you’ll see that each image is composed of hand-curated photo mosaic of nearly 1,000 photos from the BID library of Downtown people, places and events from the past decade. The mosaic represents the “fabric” that makes up Downtown—an idea created and carried out by the BID’s Digital Communications and Design Manager Adrian Saunders who used photo mosaic generation software to achieve the multi-layered effect of the design.

This year, banners were installed in September along sections of K Street, New York Avenue, G Street, D Street, Constitution Avenue, 3rd Street, 12th Street, 13th Street and 14th Street.

These banners, replaced and updated every few years by the BID, contribute to the active and festive spirit of DowntownDC and help brand the 138-block area that makes up the DowntownDC BID for all pedestrians and motorists in Downtown.

So, the next time you’re out on the streets of Downtown, look up and then look closely to find out what you can recognize in the photo mosaic above you.
