Congratulations to the Helen Hayes awardees who have been recognized for artistic excellence in local theater. Downtown BID area theaters took home the prize in six of 26 categories. They are:
 
Outstanding Director, Resident Play - Shakespeare Theatre Company (450 7th Street), “King Lear,” Robert Falls
 
Outstanding Set Design, Resident Production Shakespeare Theatre Co., “Design for Living,” James Noone
 
Outstanding Supporting Actress, Resident Musical Ford’s Theatre (511 10th Street), “The Civil War,” Eleasha Gamble
 
The Charles MacArthur Award for Outstanding New Play or Musical Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company (641 D Street), “Antebellum,” Robert O’Hara; and “Eclipsed,” Danai Gurira
 
The Robert Prosky Award for Outstanding Lead Actor, Resident Play Shakespeare Theatre Co., “King Lear,” Stacy Keach

The Helen Hayes Awards, one of the country’s most esteemed cultural events, is named for the legendary actress nicknamed “The First Lady of the American Theater.” She was one of the few people to win an Emmy, an Oscar, a Grammy and a Tony award.
