The National Candlelight Vigil, which takes place during National Police Week, will be held at the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial in the 400 block of E Street on Thursday, May 13 at 8:00 pm.
The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) sponsored ceremony recognizes federal, state and local law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. Last year, more than 126 officers were killed.
During this year’s vigil, more than 320 names newly engraved on the Memorial will be formally dedicated. The names now total more than 18,600, dating back to the first known death in 1792.
The Vigil will be shown on a free videocast, and also will include musical tributes, a laser light show and remarks by US Attorney General Eric Holder. The National Conference of Law Enforcement Emerald Societies organizes the march of bagpipers, which follows on May 14. The procession travels from New Jersey Avenue & F Street to the Memorial at 6:00 pm.
