Road and Tunnel Repair Update

Release Date: Thursday, December 15th 2011

Construction progress is being made on the K Street, H Street and Massachusetts Avenue bridges over I-395—as well as the 3rd Street Tunnel—that began in mid-October. Some updates and helpful information from the District Department of Transportation (DDOT):
  • Bus and DC Circulator stops on H Street between Massachusetts Avenue and 2nd Street remain accessible despite construction; but pedestrians are being directed to a sidewalk near Cobb Park, just outside the DowntownDC BID area.
  • Minor delays caused by an unexpected hole on the H Street bridge over the 3rd Street Tunnel, officially called the Air Rights Tunnel, are no more; the repair is completed and work to remove the sidewalk and fix the surface westbound on H Street continues.
  • Construction hours are still 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday; however, work might be performed occasionally on weekends when needed.
  • A minimum of one traffic lane is open at all times in each direction on construction roadways.
  • A minimum of two lanes are open at all times in each direction in the tunnel.
  • Traffic signs and message boards direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic, so stay alert.
