Restaurant Comings and Goings

Release Date: Thursday, December 22nd 2011

If you’ve been wondering about the space vacated recently by FunXion (1309 F Street), the earth-conscious restaurant that opened last year with a no-oil-salt-or-added-sugar menu, word on the street is that District Taco will be moving in this spring or earlier. Only time will tell. The mobile food cart already has a shop in Arlington, and a second brick-and-mortar location could place it next to bustling Roti Mediterranean Grill (1311 F Street), a fast-casual restaurant that opened Downtown in November.

In other news, kabob foodies have never had it so good. King of Kabob (1018 Vermont Avenue), which replaced Bao Restaurant and Lounge last August, now has competition—directly across the street. Grill Kabob recently opened an eatery at 1025 Vermont Avenue formerly occupied by Spice Express, the Indian bistro. Both Grill Kabob and King of Kabob—owners of the old Food Factory in College Park, Maryland, and Arlington, Virginia—serve lamb, chicken and beef kabobs, as well as salads and side orders. Grill Kabob also has a location at The Shops at National Place (1331 Pennsylvania Avenue).

Finally, Caldo (300 Massachusetts Avenue), the Italian restaurant that planned to open in the Mass Court apartment building, won’t open at all. Chalk it up to availability, or the lack thereof. The chef reportedly wanted to open the restaurant this month, but it turned into a no can do situation.
